Purpose and rationale
Purpose
- The purpose of the qualification is to provide grounding of knowledge within the core sub-fields of Human Movement Science with specific emphasis on the applications of scientific principles as a set of guidelines to better understand the area of Sport and Exercise Science. This will result in the accompanying competencies and attitudes to the practice of Sport and Exercise Science, pursue further intellectual development, and contribute to society.
- Having successfully completed the programme, in-line with Exit Level Outcomes; students should be able to conduct further researches on key critical issues of Human Movement Science/Sport and Exercise Science in order to disseminate broader knowledge for health promotion and Sport and Exercise Science, assess sport performance and provide intervention programs to all structures of the community at large.
Rationale
- The nature of the programme develops from the broader understanding of Human Movement as a study discipline and application of appropriate scientific principles to better understand how a human being move from one point to another, what makes other individuals to move/walk slowly compared to others, etc. It is in this essence that the qualification of this nature be developed comparatively worldwide and with consultations with experts in the field of Human Movement and Sciences as sub-disciplines to produce this professional career of choice.
- It is envisaged that this qualification will provide South Africa with sufficient numbers of graduate Sport and Exercise Science Professionals with a clear and growing understanding of the science of sport and in order to ensure professional practice in the sport industry for both amateur and elite sport performances.
- Appropriate work placement for students/candidates after completion of the four year study programme may include: Sport Clubs, Sport Federations, Schools - Physical Education, Gymnasiums, High Performance Centers and Institute for Sport Performances, Municipalities, and Government Departments.
- The appropriate learning pathway of the programme resides on team work, student centered, leadership skills, creativity and innovation and the use of Technology (eLearning) in better understanding the art of Science in Human Movement.
- Graduates of the programme will play a critical role in the development of Sport/Sport for Development concept within our society. It is envisaged that this will also aid as a guiding tool in using sport performance for health promotion to individuals of all ages within the society.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The nature of the study programme allows for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). It is envisaged that at least 10 % of the total admission into the study programme shall be considered for RPL. Candidates with prior work and academic experiences shall be credited with credits comparable to such experience.
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirement shall be Matric with Exemption and Biology E (Higher Grade), Physical Science E (Higher Grade) and English E (Higher Grade). National Senior Certificate and adequate achievement in Life Sciences, English and Physical Science (Bachelors Endorsement).

- Conduct coaching/assessment clinics for community, sport clubs and federations in order to improve performance.
Integrated Assessment
Students' assessment will be done through the integrated assessment strategies of both summative and formative including skills training, simulation/laboratory techniques, work placement assessment, oral presentations, practical, portfolio, and projects reports, tests, assignments, research and self-directed learning. The processes will be closely monitored through carefully planned internal assessment of student learning, external moderation of student learning achievements by personnel appropriately selected and approved by Senate and Council of the University. The study programme is diversified in nature and adopt Problem Based Learning methodology which is more student centred and exposes students to various learning path: experiential learning in laboratory, skills development, community- based or work-based learning projects, self-directed learning approach, social learning or group work or team-based approach, clinical practice/internship, assignments and presentations, e-learning, application of principles, reports and portfolios.
Progression and comparability
Articulation options
On completion of the qualification, articulation is possible with cognate Master's Degree in the fields of specialisations including: Exercise Science, Sport Science, Human Movement Science, Physical Activity and Sport Management, and Biokinetics. Graduates may also proceed to other institutions for Postgraduate studies in any of these areas. Articulations of the programme permit candidate to obtain their Doctor of Philosophy (PhDs) in any of the field mentioned above at any tertiary institution worldwide.
