Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Engineering Geology
The purpose of the qualification is to provide students with the basic elements of earth sciences: mineralogy, physical geology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, historical geology, hydrogeology and geochemistry, as well as an introduction to engineering geology, environmental geology, soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Although the qualification may allow graduates to find employment in certain sectors, the qualification is mainly intended to provide the necessary background and entry requirements for the honours qualification in Engineering and Environmental Geology.

Purpose and rationale

Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Exit level outcomes
- Work in groups to solve specific problems and to consult with practitioners in the field.
- Carry out tasks and projects according to strict time tables, and penalties for late submission is imposed. Development of life-long awareness of the importance of time scheduling is intended.
- The collection of data (e.g. from literature, laboratory or fieldwork), analysing and organising it (e.g. using sections, maps and GIS presentations) and drawing conclusions concerning the interaction between the geological environment and human development projects.
- Develop regular oral and written presentations in which use is made of diagrams, mathematical formulae and text.
- Execute projects based on their effectiveness and with due regard to their impact on the environment.
- Utilise a wider field of knowledge and technology.
- Exposure to real-life problems and must compete with others in proposing solutions, thereby encouraging original thinking and innovation in a competitive environment.
