Bachelor of Science Honours in Sport Science

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for research based Postgraduate study. The qualification serves to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in Sport Science and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Sport Science. This qualification demand a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence. The learner should develop applied competence in the analysis, interpretation and application of sport science principles in the fitness and health, coaching and teaching sectors of the sport industry. The learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of sport science and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on sport science. The learner should further be able to reflect on his/her scientific decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of sport science as practice. The learner should be able to: - Resolve typical problems that exist in the management of sport environments.

Purpose and rationale

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for research based Postgraduate study.   • Apply different learning strategies in the study of sport and related competencies.
  • Apply strategic planning competencies.
  • Execute financial planning, control and analysis.
  • Manage the human resources of a sport environment/organisation.

Rationale

There is a need for qualified professionals in the field of Sport Science in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals and enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in this field.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning in case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the university concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, learners may gain access, advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this university.

" Bachelor of Science, NQF Level 7, 360 Credits with majors in Human Movement Studies or any related qualification.

  1. Demonstrate their ability to apply theoretical principles of problem identification and solving correctly in Sport Science and reflect on the applications made.
  2. Plan and apply research in Sport Science correctly, including the precise gathering, analysing, synthesising and interpreting of information correctly utilising relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on research undertaken.
  3. Communicate effectively in writing and with the different role-players in the field of Sport Science by utilising different modes of communication and reflecting on the applications made.
  4. Develop an accountable theoretical and practical macro-vision of Sport Science locally, provincially/regionally, nationally and internationally.

Formative Assessment practices that will be implemented

Formative Assessment is aimed at the developing of a life-long learning culture based on continuous self-study and comprises the following: practical and class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests, formal module tests in written or oral mode, research that leads to scientific assignments, self-assessment and group-assessment.

Summative Assessment practices that will be implemented

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a three hour written or oral examination at the end of each module on the study material covered in the module or other modules already passed.

Pass requirements that will be implemented

Learners must achieve a minimum mark of 40% in the Formative Assessment to gain examination admission in each module.

This admission mark is made up of all methods of Formative Assessment (tests and assignments) employed in a particular module. Summative Assessment will assess learners by means of a written examination in each module, for which a minimum mark of 40% must be obtained. Learners pass a module by obtaining a final mark of at least 50%: 50 % comprises the mark obtained for the formative assessment, and 50% comprises the mark obtained in the examination. Learners with a final exam mark of at least 45%, may be granted a supplementary examination in the relevant module.
