Purpose and rationale

The purpose of the Bachelor of Science Honours in Real Estate is to provide qualifiers with an integrated and effective qualifying learner-level base of knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the diverse fields (commerce, construction management and natural science and technology) required to prepare for a professional career in real estate, whether in the private or public sector.

The qualification will provide South Africa with professionals able to actively participate in the various components of the real estate sector of the economy.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Science in Real Estate, NQF Level 7.

Or

  • Advanced Diploma in Real Estate, NQF Level 7.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Knowledge and skills and basic knowledge about property development, property management, property valuation and property investment.

Associated assessment criteria

The following Associated Assessment Criteria applies across Exit Level Outcomes

  • Identify, analyse, develop and manage property developments;
  • Work effectively in multidisciplinary professional teams and community structures;
  • Organise and manage his/her own activities responsibly and effectively;
  • Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate socio-economic, legal, financial, physical and marketing information applicable to property developments;
  • Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and language skills in oral and written persuasion;
  • Manage the implementation of building technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment;
  • Undertake and manage property developments with due regard to the built environment as a sub- system of the socio-economic and physical world;
  • Apply entrepreneurial skills in the development of the built environment.

Integrated assessment

Mastery of the knowledge and skills required is demonstrated by regular written and oral testing of Learners in all courses (including assignments on the critical evaluation of the theory as applied in practice) culminating in written examinations at the end of each semester/year.

  • All examinations are subject to both internal and external examination based upon pre-approved papers and written memoranda, while final year results are subject to review by an examination panel.
  • Testing includes demonstration of both factual and analytical skills as evidenced in, among others, an essay on an approved topic.
  • Simulations.
  • Written examinations.
  • Oral examinations.
  • Written assignments, both theoretical and practical case/field studies.
