Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to further qualify the graduate in well-developed skills and ensure that he/she is able to initiate research and write and complete a protocol in an area concerning Radiation Oncology.

Once qualified, the student will be converse in the area of further research and demonstrate craftsmanship. The graduate will successfully complete a dissertation on the relevant research.

A life-long learning attitude and continual self-development will be ensured.

Entry requirements and RPL

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is

  • Bachelor of Health Sciences in Radiation Therapy and Oncology, NQF Level 7.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Have the basic knowledge of ongoing clinical research in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
  2. Research and identify any areas in Radiation Oncology where an in-depth study would be useful. This would include literature studies and research of the existing data available.
  3. Have the ability to initiate and write a research protocol, which is acceptable by the Ethics Committee.
  4. Perform and manage the relevant research.
  5. Complete the research and finalise an acceptable thesis, according to international standards.

Associated assessment criteria

  • Demonstrate an overall knowledge of all the different aspects of research in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
  • Have the ability to identify areas in which further research studies could be initiated, as well as the ability to do literature and departmental data searches and extract the information needed.
  • Ensure that the proposal is relevant and applicable, and that the research field is fully understood and feasible.
  • All data is entered consistently and recorded accurately. Ensure that the research protocol is successfully managed.
  • Come to a valid conclusion through statistical analysis of the data presented. Successfully complete a dissertation on the final outcome of the research protocol according to international standards.
