Purpose and rationale
Provide graduates with inter-disciplinary knowledge and applied competence in the scientific and health aspects of indigenous herbs that have medicinal and nutritional value.
This qualification will create enormous value by
- Increasing intellectual capacity in the rapidly growing Alternative Health industry that critically lacks scientific expertise related to the safety, efficacy and mechanisms of action of herbal medicines and nutritional supplements.
- Producing graduates who can innovatively develop and sustain the Alternative Health industry, because they recognise the importance of research in this area.
- Providing high quality graduates for the expansive Alternative Health industry, whose relevant scientific training underpins their strong market value and competitive employment prospects.
- Developing research capacity that will stimulate growth in the numbers of Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students between universities, the Alternative Health industry and related economic sectors on a national, continental and global level.

Entry Requirements
- A Bachelor's Degree, Level 7 with Basic Science, Health Science, Education, Engineering, Horticulture or Landscaping specialisations.
- A National Diploma, Level 6 in any of the abovementioned specialities, and at least two years' appropriate experience.
- A tertiary qualification with at least five years' appropriate experience and extensive experience or other qualifications which are evaluated by the Faculty as equivalent.

- Display specialised scholastic and basic research skills in indigenous herbs of medicinal and nutritional value.
- Possess specialised in-depth knowledge of indigenous herbs of medicinal and nutritional value.
- Have the capability of information processing at the level of analysis, transformation and evaluation of abstract data and concepts, together with formulation of appropriate responses to contextually resolve problems.
- Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader community, using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.
- Assume responsibility for planning, resourcing and managing processes within broad parameters for largely defined activities and assume complete accountability for determining, achieving and evaluating personal and/or group output.

- Perform a full range of standard and non-standard procedures, often in non-standard combinations across the constituent components of indigenous herbs in complex and variable routine and non-routine contexts.
- Research reports.

- The Faculty has adopted a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consist of a number of assessment events administered throughout the year and a variety of assessment instruments are used (for example tests, essays, practical reports, project reports and oral presentations).
