Purpose and rationale

The purpose of the interdisciplinary specialisation is to provide the qualifiers with advanced knowledge and skills to apply the methods and techniques of geo-information management to problem-solving activities in various application areas such as environmental sciences, environmental management, planning, engineering, business, utilities, health, education, etc.

This degree builds on the knowledge and skills in respect of geo-information management obtained in undergraduate studies in various disciplines. The qualifier is empowered with advanced applied competence in matters such as Remote Sensing, Surveying, Geographic Information Systems, Cartography and Spatial Analysis.

A further purpose of the qualification is to help alleviate the current shortage of adequately qualified personnel in the field of geo-information management. This will have a positive effect on information supply to the decision-making and development processes required for sustainable development in South Africa.
