Purpose and rationale

To develop and empower postgraduate learners who are going to (i) pursue a career in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, (ii) do Masters studies and research in Mathematical, Physical and Computer Sciences, (iii) apply Mathematics in those disciplines and areas of life that require high-level mathematical skills.

Entry requirements and RPL

Recognition of prior learning

(i) A good pass in the Mathematical Sciences B S C Programme or

(ii) A good pass in an equivalent Mathematical Sciences programme from UFH or another University /Technikon. The Heads of the Departments in the School of Mathematical Sciences will decide on the equivalence of the programme.

Learners should demonstrate

(i) General content knowledge of topics (e.g. formal proofs of theorems);

(ii) Deep and mature understanding of content topics and abstraction in Mathematics (e.g. interpretation of abstract statements and their application);

(iii) Ability to apply (directly and indirectly) the theory and knowledge acquired in Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

(iv) Creative thinking and problem-solving skills, (e.g. solving a problem not similar to any of those given in class or as homework, using the theory learnt in the programme).

(v) Ability to collect and analysing, organizing and critically evaluating information;

(vi) Ability to reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to learn more effectively;

(vii) Research ability and report writing skills.

(viii) Ability to present papers at seminars.

(ix) Ability to work effectively with others as a member of a team, organization and community;

(x) Ability to explore education and career opportunities.

Students in this programme may carry at most 434 credits into B SC (Mathematics), B Sc (Mathematical Statistics), B Sc (Computer Science)and B Sc (Physics). Students from the listed programmes may also be admitted into the programme carrying 434 credits. Programme leads to Masters in any of the listed fields.
