Purpose and rationale
- Firstly, it provides opportunities for recent graduates in the Natural Sciences without any of the specialisations as majors, but who have demonstrated potential for graduate studies by completing their first Degree with at least a C aggregate, to specialise in any of the above fields and by doing so, improve their chances of employment.
- Secondly, it provides employed graduates with the opportunity to use the programme to enhance their career prospects by enrolling and completing the Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in any of the specialisations and/or the postgraduate Diploma in any of the specialisations on a full-or part-time basis.
- Thirdly, it provides experienced persons from industry who do not have a formal university qualification but who have the potential and experience to complete graduate level studies, with the flexibility to enrol for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree and, on completion, enrol for a postgraduate Diploma or the M.Sc. Degree in any of the specialisations.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
In the case of applicants without a Bachelor's Degree, additional information on the following aspects must be submitted on application:
- Curriculum vitae detailing all previous work experience and the period of employment.
- Referee reports from current and precious employers.
- Any other information as may be required.
Senate, upon the recommendation of the Departmental Chairperson, may prescribe additional modules or courses in Geology, Hydro-geology, Exploration Geo-chemistry and Petroleum Geology or other relevant subjects as deemed necessary.

To enter the qualification, applicants need
- Bachelor's Degree, Level 7 with a C-average in Geology.
- Bachelor's Degree in any major or related field plus extensive practical experience in the relevant fields.

Candidates who successfully complete the Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours Degree in Geology, should be able to execute geological projects independently and write reports in areas of specialisation.

The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be applied in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes
- Geological reports.
- Carry out minor research.
- Report on research and project findings.
Integrated Assessment
- All assessments will be of an integrated nature, addressing and solving real-life problems through continuous evaluation of mini projects, tests, theory and practical examinations.
