Purpose and rationale
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge of health related sciences and specifically nursing skills and competence in a number of fields. This provides opportunities for continued, gainful, personal, professional and academic development and lifelong learning.
The second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with academically credible professional nurses who provide care within a multifaceted environment within the boundaries of the designated Health System.
The third purpose of the qualification is to provide South African society with cadres of the competent health care practitioners engaging in inter-disciplinary collaboration, to influence policy making at all levels.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Learners with prior health/nursing experience and qualifications may also apply for admission.
Entry Requirements
- Senior Certificate, Level 4 with matriculation exemption with a pass in at least 2 (two) of the following subjects: Biology, Physical science, Physiology, Mathematics or English.
- National Senior Certificate, Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's Degree studies with a pass in at least 2 (two) of the following subjects: Biology, Physical science, Physiology, Mathematics or English.
- National Certificate (Vocational), Level 4 granting access to Bachelor's Degree studies with a pass in at least 2 (two) of the following subjects: Biology, Physical science, Physiology, Mathematics or English.

- Apply fundamental and specialist knowledge and skills to meet divergent health needs.
- Apply the scientific process in addressing health related problems, within a professional-ethical framework, interpret policy and act as a change agent through formulating policy to improve the quality of nursing care and the health of the people, and demonstrate the indirect advocacy function at local and National levels.
- Display the ability to pursue lifelong learning for personal and professional growth.

- Assess within a multi-disciplinary context, the health of individuals, families and communities.
- Plan and prioritise short-term, intermediate and long-term intervention strategies to address health needs and health care issues at all levels.

- Evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention strategies and communicate the process and outcomes.
Reflect human rights issues and take account of policy relevant to the socio-political milieu Interpret policy.

Integrated Assessment
Modules will be evaluated on a continuous basis. New and innovative techniques will be investigated in order to ensure consistency between learning and assessment strategies.
Formative Assessment will include assignments, peer review and client participation.
Summative Assessments will comprise written examinations, clinical evaluations and/or case presentations.
