Bachelor of Military Science Honours

The purpose of the qualification is

To consolidate and deepen what has been learned in the first degree or qualification and to undertake advanced study in a chosen field of specialisation.

To prepare qualifiers for the profession(s) related to the field of study and to acquire the necessary professional skills to operate successfully in such an environment.

To establish a proper base for undertaking independent research through the acquirement of the necessary research skills and tools.

To stimulate interest in academic study and research and to ensure a constant supply of well equipped professionals, critical thinkers and socially aware people for the Department of Defence.

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BMil

Other qualifications

An appropriate Bachelor's or qualification approved by Senate for this purpose. Depending on the chosen field of studt, additional work and or proof of competency may be required.

The B Honours graduate will have

1. Advanced knowledge of a chosen area of specialisation and an awareness of a variety of contexts in which it may apply
2. An understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning the field of study and of its boundaries and limitations
3. Knowledge of research in the chosen field
4. An overview of recent, relevant and cutting-edge research in the chosen field
5. A familiarity with the opportunities, challenges, demands and code of good conduct of the profession(s) associated with the field of specialisation.

The B Hons graduate will be able to

1. Analyse, reformat, synthesise and evaluate a wide range of information.
2. Plan and conduct basic research
3. Use appropriate methods for the solving of problems
4. Justify and explain conclusions within the context of the field of specialisation
5. Argue critically and convincingly
6. Solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts
7. Effectively select an apply knowledge in a professional context
8. Communicate effectively in a form appropriate to the profession or discipline
9. Relate theory to practice and vice versa
10. Recognise hierarchies in systemic relationships and analyse organisational principles underpinning a system
11. Make sound theoretical judgements and evaluations

The B Hons graduate will demonstrate

1. Capacity for independent study via the completion of papers and or assignments (not expected to meet the criteria for publication, but showing potential for this)
2. The ability to evaluate the current knowledge base of the field of specialization and to relate it to a given frame of reference
3. Professional working relationships within the profession or discipline

1. The assessment used for the qualification ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.
2. A research report/essay and written and or oral examinations are used.
3. The assessment used meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Integrated assessment takes place in terms of a variety of procedures, such as class discussions, assignments, tutorials, portfolio's, simulations, workplace assessment, practical sessions, case studies, presentations, written examinations, oral examinations and research report/essay.

A research report/essay contains the results of the candidate's research.
