Purpose and rationale

THE LEARNER WILL BE CAPABLE OF

  • Performing microbiological and/or molecular biology laboratory techniques, understanding microbiologically related diseases, resistance development and pathological processes, utilising laboratory equipment, and conducting acceptable scientific research.

THE LEARNER WILL BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic Medical Microbiological/Virological science, being sterilisation, classification of micro-organisms and infections, antimicrobial susceptibility and -resistance, immunology, cost-effective investigations and principles of research methods.
  • Demonstrate the basic scientific skills to perform and interpret required specialised tests for routine diagnostic procedures as well as for research, present results in a scientifically acceptable way, assist in training of undergraduate students, and demonstrate basic computer skills;
  • Demonstrate a positive approach to life-long learning and problem solving, ethics, continuing professional development and advancing scientific knowledge in the medical environment, and demonstrate an endurance and perseverance ability and an awareness of personal limitations.

Associated assessment criteria

Learners will demonstrate their knowledge and skills in accordance with standards laid down by the University and Professional Board through:

  • Informal evaluations -feedback, literature study and a project.
  • Formal evaluation -practical projects, skills and practical presentations.
  • Formal end evaluations -a theoretical (written) examination at the end of the year and a project presentation (written and oral).
