Purpose and rationale

The purpose of the BCom Hons is to award a professional qualification to learners, to equip them with postgraduate level knowledge in the field of the endorsement and to produce competent and efficient administrators for employment in the public and private sectors including a wide range of non-governmental institutions. It also provides opportunities for continued personal and intellectual growth.

Entry requirements and RPL

BCom degree with one of the relevant endorsements as one of the major subjects with a minimum pass of 60% in the chosen major.

Exit level outcomes

The BCom Hons graduate is able to

  1. Understand and apply the principles of public policy, which includes defining public policy processes, policy decision making, policy analysis and policy implementation;
  2. Understand and apply macro economic policy and monetary and financial policy;
  3. Understand and apply the various public financial systems;
  4. Understand and apply data collection techniques and analyse and interpret data;
  5. Understand the dimensions of social research;
  6. Demonstrate his/her ability to write a research proposal and scientific report;
  7. Understand and apply principles pertaining to public personnel administration and its environment;
  8. Evaluate critical issues in public personnel administration;
  9. Demonstrate a competent knowledge of labour issues and relevant employment practices;
  10. Counsel employees;
  11. Advise management on labour matters;
  12. Conduct psychological assessment of abilities, aptitude, interest and personality profiling;
  13. Identification of systems for a referral for example, organisational dysfunction, psychological pathology;
  14. Understand and apply the principles pertaining to intergovernmental relations;
  15. Understand and apply skills pertaining to constitutional systems and intergovernmental relations;
  16. Demonstrate and understanding of gender issues;
  17. Demonstrate an understanding of community participation in government affairs;
  18. Demonstrate the ability to do sound postgraduate research in a related public administration field;
  19. Solve problems/recommend solution of problems through critical thinking and the analysis and synthesis of data according to a systems approach;
  20. Apply knowledge and comprehension of micro and macro economic principles determine and address the impact of economic problems;
  21. Apply advanced techniques and principles of Business Management;
  22. Contribute and facilitate the effectiveness of work teams;
  23. Understand and implement the practices of financial management; and
  24. Identify, assess and solve problems in financial management.

Associated assessment criteria

A comprehensive range of assessment criteria will be used to determine learner achievement. The overall criteria will include, but will not be confined to:

  1. Demonstrating the ability of having mastered the subject matter in the field of the endorsement and research methodology;
  2. Demonstrating the ability to analyse date using acceptable techniques and methods;
  3. Demonstrating the ability to develop and confidently make use of research skills for problem solving;
  4. Demonstrating effective communication in the workplace;
  5. Demonstrating the ability to apply the subject matter knowledge; and
  6. Demonstrating the ability to identify and resolve problems in the subject field through critical thinking and analyses and synthesis of relevant information.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Both continuous assessment and summative assessment strategies will be used. Multiple assessment will include regular tests, assignments, learner seminar presentations and performance in practical sessions. A detailed record and monitoring of learner progress will be maintained.

Progression and comparability

Articulation options

There is a scope for articulation of the programme, both internally and externally, as well as vertically and horizontally. Internally, the learner may move vertically by undertaking a MCom degree and horizontally, by transferring credits to the BA (Hons) or BAdmin (Hons) degree. Externally, the learner may move both vertically and horizontally by transferring credits to other related Management Science programmes.
