Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The qualification provides an opportunity for learners to achieve
- A liberal education involving at the same time an understanding of the scientific method.
- A study of the structure and working of the business world including the economic and human problems which arise in business and other organisations.
- An interdisciplinary study of economics, accounting, mathematics, sociology and organisational psychology which concentrates on the application of appropriate concepts and techniques towards the understanding, analysis and solution of problems in business management.
- A study of the scientific approach to management problems and use of current quantitative and computer techniques in those areas in business management formerly considered to be largely matters of opinion and judgement.
Rationale
The Bachelor of Business Science prepares learners to plan or make a career in a business enterprise or other organisation. The Bachelor of Business Science qualification also prepared learners for Postgraduate study; also providing learners with a well-rounded and broad education across several Business disciplines, thus preparing them for a wide range of professions crucial to the welfare of society; produce learners who can think laterally, critically and creatively; produce learners for life-long learning; produce learners who understand the principles of, and are capable of critical citizenship.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.
In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

- Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 with endorsement.

Compulsory and Elective Modules
There are 10 common core courses in the Degree and then the discipline major for each of the streams.
Exit level outcomes
- Understand and manipulate quantitative information provided in tables, graphs and sets of equations;
- Critically understand written texts of descriptive, prescriptive and argumentative natures;
- Produce texts of descriptive, prescriptive and argumentative natures to accepted international standards in his or her specific field of training;
- Find information for professional relevance efficiently and independently;
- Use and organise such information to conduct systematic research aimed at providing answers to questions whose resolutions are not antecedently known, or to verifying answers based on assumptions of 'accepted wisdom';
- Understand and critically appreciate the contribution of major social and environmental activities to the community and national life;
- Use information-technology standard in professional offices (at the time of his or her graduation) efficiently and independently;
- Use the internet to find and access information;
- Understand when and how to acknowledge the limitations of his or her own expertise and elicit the more appropriate expertise of others;
- Appreciate the importance of life-long learning and the importance of self-initiative in pursuing it;
- Understand and internalise as a personal value the importance of conducting professional activity within the scope of national, provincial, municipal and international law.
Associated assessment criteria
The following Associated Assessment Criteria will assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner.
- Demonstrate of ability to organise ideas and facts in a logical, coherent way.
- Demonstrate of ability to anticipate the responses and objections of an imagined reader.
- Integrate numerical data into prose descriptions and arguments.
- Demonstrate understanding of the need to cite references fairly and accurately.
- Demonstrate theability to represent and consider views and perspectives alternative to his or her own.
Integrated Assessment
There is intergration of learning and assessment into this qualification. Continuous formative assessment will ensure that learners get feedback on their progress towards the achievement of specific learning outcomes.
Summative assessment is concerned with the judgement of the learning to the learner attributes of the qualification. Such judgement will include integrated assessments which assess the learner's ability to integrate the larger body of knowledge, competencies and attitudes that are represented by the learners attributes, either as a whole or as components of the qualification.
Assignments designed to meet the requirements of integrated assessment will be such as to achieve
- Integration of the achievement of learner attributes in a way that demonstrates that the purpose of the qualification as a whole has been achieved in the component parts of the qualification of study.
- Evaluation of learner performance to demonstrate applied competence;
And
- Criterion-referenced assessment, which is clearly explained to and understood by the learners and that can be applied in the Recognition of Prior Learning.
A wide range of knowledge, skills, competencies and attitudes will be integrated using innovative methods - and in the assessment of outcomes due recognition will be given to criteria and methods of assessment that assess these appropriately and adequately.
Moderation of learners' achievements and the overall award of the qualification at the exit level will be based on the well-established procedures of moderation (including, for example, the use of accredited/registered external examiners (external to the university).

This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.
Horizontal Articulation
- Bachelor of Education Honours in Business Science Education, NQF Level 8.
Vertical Articulation
- Master of Commerce, NQF Level 9.
- Master of Business Science in Accounting, NQF Level 9.
- Master of Business Science in Actuarial Science, NQF Level 9.
International comparability
The qualification is comparable to other similar 4-year business qualifications offered in other parts of the world, with regards to outcomes and assessment criteria, Degree of difficulty and notional learning time. Learners can proceed into a range of Masters or Doctoral qualifications internationally.
