Purpose and rationale
This qualification meets three purposes
Firstly,
- The qualification provides qualifiers with qualifying Learner level study opportunities in the following five areas of fine art specialisation; design and new media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
- The qualification provides qualifiers with the requisite skills and knowledge base to take up careers in the fields of fine art, art theory, arts education, design, new media and related fields.
- The qualification provides qualifiers with access to postgraduate study opportunities in the fields of art education and art practice.
Secondly, the qualification helps meet the social and intellectual needs of South Africa in the important areas of visual arts practice and interpretation, aesthetics, and those areas of intellectual activity which are predicated on the visual.
Thirdly, the qualification, and the postgraduate study paths it opens up, provides South African schools, institutions and institution with sufficient numbers of qualified art teachers and lecturers.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor studies.

- Understand visual art related texts, images, processes and perceptual phenomena.
- Produce images and analytical texts, which are contextually relevant.
- Understand and critically appreciate the contribution of major artistic and cultural activities and performances to community and national life.

The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes
- Analyse and understand a wide variety of signifying practices that make up the weave of social and cultural life.
- Understand the historical dimensions of culture and signification.
- Use a range of theoretical frameworks to evaluate phenomena critically and in an intellectually rigorous way.
- Analyse evidence and data with a sensitivity to historical forces.
- Read and interpret the visual, discursive, linguistic and cultural signs and stimuli in the world around him/her.
- Write and speak clearly and fluently, ideally in more than one language, but at least in English.
- Exercise imagination and creativity in a range of expressive activities.
- Use computer technology.
- Use the internet to find and access information.
- Apply appropriate computer-aided design and editing packages.
- Appreciate the importance of life-long learning.
