Bachelor of Arts Honours in Sports Recreation and Exercise Science

This programme is designed to present students who wish to pursue research in Human Movement Studies with the necessary in-depth knowledge and research skills. The multi-disciplinary nature of the curriculum allows students to engage with research developments in the various sub-disciplines with a view to identifying an appropriate research topic. Although students could terminate their studies upon completion of this Degree, the programme is designed to prepare students for independent research at a Masters Level.

Purpose and rationale

This programme is designed to present students who wish to pursue research in Human Movement Studies with the necessary in-depth knowledge and research skills. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The structure of this qualification makes the Recognition of Prior Learning possible. This qualification may therefore be accessed and/or be achieved in part through the Recognition of Prior Learning, which includes formal learning and work experience.

Entry Requirements

Learners in possession of the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (BSc) Human Movement Studies (H.M.S.) Degree, or a Higher Diploma in Education Independent Government Cost Estimate (IGCE) in Human Movement Studies, may enrol for this programme. In addition, candidates who do not have undergraduate qualifications in Human Movement Studies, but are in possession of a National Qualification Framework Level 6 qualification such as a four- year teacher's Diploma, may also enrol for the programme, provided that they have specialised in physical education or a related field up to their final year, and have a minimum of 10 years professional or practical experience in this field.

  1. Interpret, analyse and contextualise research findings in the sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies.
  2. Understand and apply the theoretical foundations of the various sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies.
  3. Understand and apply the methodological frameworks that are most appropriate to doing research in the various sub-disciplines of Human Movement Studies.

The Associated Assessment Criteria will be applied in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes

  • Develop and present a research proposal independently.
  • Employ critical thinking skills during debates regarding Human Movement Studies subject matter.
  • Read and examine professional and academic texts with insight.

  • Formal end of course assessment (Summative).
  • Continuing formal assessment (Formative and Summative).
