Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The purpose of Bachelor of Arts Honours in Sport Science is to provide learners with applied competence in Sport Science, including fitness and health, coaching and teaching sectors of the Sport Industry. The qualification is designed to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Sport Science. The aim is to develop the scientific decision making abilities of the learner and to effect the holistic context of Sport Science as a practice.
Rationale
The institution has identified a need for this qualification in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals to enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in the field of Sport Science. It is envisaged that this qualification will provide South Africa with sufficient numbers of Sport Science professionals with a clear and growing understanding of the science of sport and in order to ensure professional practice in the sport industry.
This qualification serves to consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in the discipline, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of that discipline. This qualification demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an integral part of education and academic practice. It acknowledges that all learning has value will endeavour to assess prior learning and award credit where relevant. RPL is managed according to the institution's RPL policy, which will be applied as follows for purpose of this qualification as set out in the policy:
i Through RPL, a learner may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that he/she continues his/her studies at the institution.
ii. Recognition takes place in terms of requirements and procedures applied by the Faculty.
iii. RPL in the case of a learner not complying with the formal entry requirements.
- is conducted after payment of the prescribed fees in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the institution.
- is based on other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.
- is considered only where prior learning corresponds to the required NQF-level.
- takes place where prior learning in terms of applied competencies is relevant to the content and outcomes of the programme.
- is considered in terms of an assessment procedure that includes a motivated recommendation by an assessment panel to the Dean's Committee of CBE.
- is finally decided upon by the Dean's Committee.

This qualification consists of a compulsory modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 8 totalling 120 Credits.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3
- Apply a range of research methodologies and techniques to research an area of Sport Science.
- Discuss the principles, scope, theories and epistemologies in the field of Sport Science clearly.
- Make sound theoretical judgements based on current research in Sport Science based on evidence.
- Produce independent research results in a scholarly manner.
Integrated Assessment
Formative assessment is aimed at the developing of a life-long learning culture based on continuous self-study and comprises the following: practical and class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests, formal module tests in written or oral mode, research that leads to scientific assignments, self-assessment and group-assessment.
Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a three-hour written or oral examination at the end of each module on the study material covered in the module or other modules already passed.
Summative assessment will assess the learner by means of a written examination in each module. 50 % comprises the mark obtained for the formative assessment, and 50% comprises the mark obtained in the examination. Learners with a final examination mark of at least 45%, may be granted a supplementary examination in the relevant module.
