Purpose and rationale
The qualification aims
- To provide learners with in-depth knowledge of the basic subfields in political science such as: African Politics, South African Politics, Foreign Policy Analysis, Public Policy Analysis, International organisations, Political Science Research Methodology.
- To lay the basis for further training in Political Science which is more career orientated.
- To enable learners to acquire knowledge in political research methodology, theories and techniques in research projects.
- To provide learners with specialised theoretical knowledge and experience as well as analytical and technical skills.
- To equip learners with the necessary political and economic knowledge in South African, regional, continental and international politics.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is
- Bachelor of Political Science. NQF Level 7.
- Bachelor of Administration in Political Science, Level 7.

Exit level outcomes
A thorough, critical and integrated understanding of
- Theory, historical trends and contemporary issues which constitute the core of political science as an academic discipline.
- Understanding of theoretical and methodological aspects of political science research.
- Be able to formulate research topics, and questions in political science, collect and interpret data, and write a comprehensive political science research report.

Integrated Assessment
Writing of research reports, a thesis, a journal article and an oral defence.
Seminar presentation, written assignments, written examinations in all the modules and a mini dissertation.
