Purpose and rationale

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to provide an opportunity for learners to broaden their knowledge in German within the Faculty of Arts. This provides an opportunity to read extensively, to become acquainted with some of the classic texts in the German discipline, to become involved in a conversation with its most important thinkers and to take part in these debates with confidence. The solid basis acquires way that prepares the learner for Postgraduate research. This gives provision for an opportunity not only to broaden but also to deepen insight the discipline as specified.

Rationale

German is an academic and vocational discipline which equips Learners in the German language and civilisation. Learners are also provided with the skills to understand the target language and culture within the wider context of the South African multilingual and multicultural context. In its own right the German qualification provides Learners with a valuable and directly relevant qualification for careers in the South African diplomatic service, in international trade and commerce and in government organs that deal with the same, in tourism, in publishing (translation) - in short for any career that involves contact with German-speakers or German text. Within the South African context, it provides the vital experience of a western culture that is of economic importance to South Africa and generally enables Learners in terms of the SAQA critical outcomes at a level appropriate to the qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Yes

The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.

In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Qualification rules

This qualification consists of the following compulsory modules at NQF Level 8 totalling 120 Credits.

  • A Period (Literature Period), Level 8, 25 Credits.
  • A Genre, Level 8, 20 Credits.
  • Literature Theory, Level 8, 25 Credits.
  • Language, Level 8, 20 Credits.
  • Research Module, Level 8, 30 Credits.

Exit level outcomes

  1. Analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate a substantial amount of information in German.
  2. Communicate competently in German in a professional situation.
  3. If the translation option synthesises, understand the mechanics involved in the translation process (methodology and application) as well as the practical use of translation in a professional environment.
  4. Work both individually and as a member of a group.
  5. Make use of the Internet in conducting research.

The following methods of assessment will be used

Formative assessment - There will be four assessments, all of which will contribute to the learner's final mark. These will come in the form of literature surveys, essays, presentations and research proposals.

Summative assessment - There will be a final examination at the end of the semester.

International comparability

The Degree has been compared against L-Universita ta' Malta,

Standford University in the United States of America and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

The Qualification was compared against BA (Hons) Degree Qualifications offered by the University of Johannesburg and the University of Delhi. The Qualifications were found to be similar, e.g. with regards to content and outcomes. For example, in terms of results, the following are comparable:

  1. Learning the outcomes-based approach to teaching.
  2. Developing the learner's capacity to comprehend, analyse and synthesise complex written and oral information in German.
  3. Enable learners to communicate independently with little or no help from the native speakers of the language.
