Purpose and rationale
The purpose of the qualification is to prepare learners at an advanced level for a management in the fields of economics and business applied to the agricultural and natural resources sector. This course targets specifically those that have to operate at policy and operational level in institutions dealing with the socio-economic problems of developing areas.
This qualification is a first graduate Degree consisting only of course work. The purpose of the qualification is, therefore, to supply the agricultural and sector with competent agricultural economists, which could work efficiency in multidisciplinary teams to address the problems of rural areas.
Learners will therefore cover a wide range of course providing them with knowledge and skills at more depth than at the under-graduate level.

- Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in Agricultural Economics, NQF Level 7.

Exit level outcomes
The B Inst Agric (Agricultural Economics) graduate has an advanced theoretical understanding of developmental issues in rural and farming communities.
The ability to apply the principles of agricultural economics to help to find solutions to the problems of developing areas.
Specify critical cross-field outcomes
- Be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team on agricultural and natural resource issues.
- Identify, analyse and solve economic problems in the rural economy of developing areas.
- Demonstrate the ability to do problem-solving research in the agricultural and natural resources sector.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate a research problem, formulate a hypothesis, do a literature study and execute field-level research and write a scientific report independently.

- Theoretical basis for problem-solving in natural and biological resources.
- Basic quantitative and analytical skills as it relate to economic applications.
- Advanced theoretical knowledge of selected aspects of agricultural economics, including farm management, resource economics, agricultural marketing, agricultural and rural finance and agricultural development.
- Knowledge of agricultural institutions and rural systems.
- Knowledge of project planning and appraisal.
- Basic understanding of the issues in rural development.
