Purpose and rationale

The purpose of the BAdmin degree is to award a professional qualification to learners and to equip them with graduate level knowledge in Public Administration, and to provide competent and efficient administrators for employment in governmental and non-governmental organisations. Exit level outcomes

The BAdmin graduate is able to

  1. Understand public administration and its environment;
  2. Understand, interpret and implement public policy as contained in legislation;
  3. Understand and apply sound financial management principles;
  4. Understand the organisational arrangements that are involved in public administration;
  5. Understand the provision and utilisation of human resources in public administration.
  6. Understand the control mechanisms that are utilized in public administration and its environment;
  7. Understand and apply work procedures in public administration;
  8. Apply the skills, values and knowledge pertaining to Public Administration in the public, private and non governmental institutions;
  9. Gather, analyse and interpret data in the field of Public Administration;
  10. Understand the political dynamics and government functioning;
  11. Understand and apply basic computing skills;
  12. Understand and interpret administrative law with a view of strengthening public administration skills; and
  13. Communicate effectively in the working environment.

Associated assessment criteria

A comprehensive range of assessment criteria will be used to determine learner achievement. The overall criteria will include, but will not be confined to:

  1. Demonstrating the ability to understand public administration and its environment;
  2. Demonstrating the ability to interpret and implement public policy as contained in legislation;
  3. Demonstrating the ability to apply sound financial management principles;
  4. Demonstrating the ability to apply organisational arrangements that are applicable in public administration;
  5. Demonstrating the ability to apply and utilize human resources in public administration;
  6. Demonstrating the ability to apply work procedures in public administration;
  7. Demonstrating the ability to apply the skills, values and knowledge pertaining to public administration in public, private and non governmental institutions;
  8. Demonstrating the ability to explain the research process and analyse and interpret research results;
  9. Demonstrating the ability to explain political dynamics and government functioning;
  10. Demonstrating the ability to apply basic computing skills;
  11. Demonstrating the ability to interpret administrative law; and
  12. Demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively in the working environment.

Integrated assessment

A rigorous system of continuous assessment, which reflects learner's integration of knowledge and skills. The assessment strategies will include: tutorials, practicals, tests and written and oral examinations.

Articulation options

There is a scope for the articulation of the programme, both internally and externally, as well as vertically and horizontally, Internally, the learner may move vertically by undertaking a BAdmin (Hons) and horizontally by transferring credits to the BA, BCom, other BAdmin degrees and other related management sciences programmes. Externally, the programme offers potential for articulation with similar programmes offered at other institutions of higher learning.
