Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with integrated and detailed knowledge and skills of a professional and vocational nature in Office Management and Technology. A qualified learner will be able to:
- Identify, analyse, evaluate, critically reflect on and address complex problems, applying evidence-based solutions and theory driven arguments.
- Demonstrate the ability to access, process and manage information, the ability to develop appropriate processes for information gathering for a given context or use, as well as the ability to independently validate the sources of information and evaluate and manage the information.
- Develop and communicate own ideas and opinions in well-formed arguments using appropriate academic, professional or occupational discourse.
- Take decisions and act ethically and professionally and justify the decisions and actions drawing on appropriate ethical values and approaches within a support environment.
- Apply basic research principles, methodologies and techniques.
- Apply knowledge of self and team in order to develop a plan to enhance team performance.
- Understand primary labour legislation that impacts on a business unit.
Rationale
The Advanced Diploma in Office Management and Technology is designed to provide learners with integrated and detailed knowledge in the field of office management and technology. The aim of this qualification is to equip learners with skills, such as, administrative management, managing Information and Communication Technologies, strategic support management and financial management. Learners will be prepared and be able to manage work teams and office projects. This qualification will develop the depth of knowledge of learners in this area of specialisation through hands-on application in order to develop their practical skills which will enable them to apply their skills in the workplace. Learners will also be able to apply and evaluate key terms, concepts, principles and theories in this field and related disciplines. A research methodology is integrated in this qualification in order to develop competencies of learners to identify, analyse and resolve complex theoretical and industry-related problems through the selection and application of appropriate research methods and techniques. This qualification will assist in addressing national skills shortages and qualified learners will be prepared for positions as:
- Administrative Managers in e-interfaced environments.
- Managers in a variety of information management positions.
- Administrative Personnel and Trainee Business Managers in a variety of business fields.
Entry requirements and RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
In accordance with the University's Recognition of Prior Learning Policy candidates may gain access to the qualification without the prerequisite formal qualification by being granted advanced standing on the basis of the assessment of prior learning. In addition registered learners in the qualification may have prior learning assessed to be granted exemption from certain modules according to the University's policy and procedures.

- The kinds of conflict that could arise in a team or group are identified and strategies to deal with issues in a team are demonstrated in role-play situations.
- Strategies for creating a positive working environment in a team or group are explored and an indication is given of the role of the team leader in creating a positive work environment.
- The strengths and weaknesses of a group or team are identified based on reflection and team performance.
- Situations that are a cause for concern or dissent in a group or team are identified in order to decide on an appropriate management strategy.
- A plan of action is developed as a means of achieving group or team goals.
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7
- Labour legislation and policy are identified and an indication is given of who is covered.
- Legislation and policy are analysed and an indication is given of how the different pieces of legislation interact and support the South African constitution.
- The concept of freedom of association is explained with reference to employers and employees.
- The concept of unfair labour practice and dismissal is explained with examples.
Integrated Assessment
Learners will be given a minimum of three formative assessments (two tests and an assignment). Another element of formative assessment will be an industry or practical based project and Portfolio of Evidence (POE's)/Research Project which will be submitted before students sit for the final examination (summative assessment) and these will contribute 40% towards the final mark. A 3-hour examination paper per module will be written. The examination mark will contribute 60% towards the final mark.
A module lecturer will be an internal examiner for that module and all papers will be externally moderated. Examiners and moderators are appointed by the Senate as per the University's assessment policy. External moderators will be suitably qualified and experienced people from industry and/or practicing academics from other universities. The procedure for the appointment of external moderators is laid down in the institutional examinations' manual.
