Purpose and rationale
Purpose
The Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management (HRM) will not only deepen knowledge of and competencies in managing human resources but will also introduce qualifying learners with other related qualifications and experience in managing human resources to a formal study qualification in human resource management. This will be achieved by a curriculum that is based on the Human Resource Competency Model of the South Africa (SA) Board for People Practices. This curriculum includes advanced studies in the three core fields of human resources namely human resource management, human resource development and employee relations. These areas are linked to advanced studies in business management to ensure integration of human resource management in the primary activities of an organisation. The Advanced Diploma also equips learners with research knowledge and skills to enable them to investigate human resource problems and prepare them for further studies.
Rationale
This qualification is intended for learners who wish to further their studies or for learners from other fields who wish to enter the profession. The qualification is aligned with the South Africa Board for People Practices (SABPP) (Human resource (HR)) Competency Framework and the National HR Standards to ensure that it meets the requirements of industry and that it contributes to the employability of graduates. The HRM qualifications are currently fully accredited by the SABPP. Qualifying learners will be able to register as HR Practitioners after obtaining relevant HR work experience. This will alleviate the shortage of professionally registered HR practitioners in SA.

Profound shifts in the global marketplace are ushering in a new era of complexity, uncertainty and change for companies. The rise of the internet and related technology has accelerated these market shifts, upending business strategies, models and processes along the way.
'Advances in technology and globalisation' as well as 'shifts in labour demographics, customer needs, and competition' are identified as underlying forces that will have the biggest impact on their organisation's talent requirements in the years ahead and as emerging markets are becoming the new centres of gravity for the global economy and the top strategic priority, competition for talent is becoming fiercer. As for the greatest challenges to HR over the next 10-years, more than one-half of surveyed HR professionals chose 'retaining and rewarding the best employees' and 'developing the next generation of corporate leaders'. About one-third chose 'creating a corporate culture that attracts the best employees to the organisation', 'remaining competitive in the talent marketplace', and 'finding employees with the increasingly specialised skills the organisation needs.' Compared with responses to the same questions in 2010, in 2012 HR professionals were more concerned with 'remaining competitive in the talent.
