Traffic Officer Learnerships 2025
Becoming a traffic officer is one of the most highly sought-after public service careers in South Africa. Understand the strict RTMC requirements, the fitness challenges, and how to spot application scams.
The four pillars of your application
If you fail on any of these four criteria, your application will not survive the first desktop screening phase.
1. Minimum Requirements
You must have a valid Grade 12 (Matric) certificate and a valid Code B (Manual) driver's license. No criminal record is permitted.
2. Medical & Fitness Tests
Traffic officer training is physically demanding. You will undergo strict physical fitness assessments and medical screenings before intake.
3. Provincial Intakes
Learnerships are rarely advertised via private companies. They are managed by Provincial Departments of Transport or the RTMC.
4. The 3-Year Diploma
Modern traffic officer training is no longer a short course. It is a 3-year NQF Level 6 occupational diploma managed by the RTMC.
Your application checklist
Follow this sequence to ensure your application stands out when real intakes open.
Prepare your document pack
Get 5 certified copies of your ID, Matric Certificate, and Driver's License. Ensure your CV is updated and highlights any community policing or leadership roles.
Monitor official channels
Do not rely on WhatsApp forwards. Check the RTMC (Road Traffic Management Corporation) website and the Department of Community Safety in your specific province.
Use the Z83 Form (If applicable)
Many provincial learnerships require you to submit the official Government Z83 Employment Form alongside your CV. Ensure it is perfectly filled out with no blanks.
Prepare for the fitness test
Start running immediately. The initial screening involves a timed 2.4km run, push-ups, and sit-ups. If you fail the physical, they do not look at your CV.

How to ensure you meet the stringent requirements of a public service position.
Requirement Area
Finding the Advert
What is required
Monitoring official provincial government domains (e.g., westerncape.gov.za or rtmc.co.za) for official traffic intake programs.
Common point of failure
Paying a fee to a Facebook page that promises a 'guaranteed traffic officer learnership'. Government learnerships are always free.
Requirement Area
The Driver's License
What is required
Holding a valid South African Code B or C1 manual driver's license without endorsements.
Common point of failure
Applying with an Automatic-only license or a Learner's License. You will be instantly disqualified.
Requirement Area
The Age Limit
What is required
Most provincial government intakes require applicants to be between the ages of 18 and 35.
Common point of failure
Applying when older than 35 without realizing the strict age parameters of government youth learnerships.
Requirement Area
Background Checks
What is required
Consenting to a full SAPS fingerprint background check and a digital footprint (social media) screening.
Common point of failure
Hiding a previous conviction for drunken driving, which is immediately flagged during the mandatory vetting phase.
Fatal application errors
These mistakes will get your application shredded.
Falling for WhatsApp scams
An applicant sees a message saying 'Traffic Officer Learnership Intake'. They transfer R500 for an 'admin fee' and never hear back.
Submitting an incomplete Z83 form
Government HR departments process thousands of applications. If you forget to date your Z83 form at the bottom, your application is shredded immediately.
Applying with a criminal record
Even a minor, expungable record from 10 years ago will disqualify you from becoming a recognized law enforcement officer unless formally cleared first.
Signals of a fake advert
Indicators that scammers are trying to steal your data or money.
- Paying money to 'recruiters' for uniform fees or application processing.
- Assuming you can do the learnership part-time or online. It is a full-time residential program at a Traffic Training College.
- Applying without certifying your ID, Matric Certificate, and Driver's License at a police station (must be under 3 months old).
- Submitting a CV with an unprofessional email address or an out-of-service phone number, causing you to miss the physical assessment call-up.
